How to Start an E-commerce Business in Tunisia: A Step-by-Step Guide (2026)
A practical step-by-step guide to starting an online store in Tunisia: choosing a product, cash on delivery, your store, operations, Facebook ads and the numbers that matter.
Starting an e-commerce business in Tunisia has never been more accessible. Most Tunisians now shop from their phones, discover products on Facebook and Instagram, and are comfortable ordering online as long as they can pay on delivery. What separates the stores that grow from the ones that close after three months is not luck. It is a handful of decisions made correctly at the start.
After helping more than 30 people go from zero to a working online business, these are the steps I recommend, in the order I recommend them.
1. Choose a product people already want
The most common beginner mistake is building a store around a product they like instead of a product the market is already asking for. Before you spend a single dinar, look for proof of demand:
- Search the Facebook Ad Library for ads running in Tunisia for similar products. Ads that have been running for weeks are usually profitable.
- Read comments under those ads. Questions about price and delivery mean real buying intent.
- Check that you can sell at a price that leaves room for delivery, returns and advertising. A good rule of thumb is a selling price of at least three times your product cost.
Products that solve a clear problem, are easy to show in a short video and are hard to find in local shops tend to perform best.
2. Understand cash on delivery before you launch
In Tunisia, cash on delivery (COD) is still the default way people pay online. That is good news, because it removes the trust barrier for buyers. It also means you carry the risk: some customers will refuse the parcel or will not answer the courier, and you pay for that return.
Your profit depends on your delivery rate, the share of orders that are actually delivered and paid. Plan your pricing with returns in mind from day one. I wrote a full guide on this: how to reduce COD returns in Tunisia.
3. Set up a simple, fast store
You do not need a complicated website to start. You need a page that loads fast on a phone, shows the product clearly, answers the main questions and makes ordering take less than a minute. The essentials:
- A clear product video or photos showing the product in use
- The price, delivery time and delivery cost, visible without scrolling
- A short order form: name, phone number, city and address
- Real customer reviews as soon as you have them
Every extra field or step in the order form costs you orders. Keep it short.
4. Organize your operations early
When orders start coming in, operations become the real business: confirming orders by phone, sending them to the courier, tracking parcels and managing stock. Doing this in notebooks and spreadsheets works for ten orders a day. It breaks at fifty.
This is exactly why we built Cody, an e-commerce platform that brings order confirmation, delivery tracking and stock in one place for COD sellers. Whatever tool you use, the goal is the same: never lose an order because it was forgotten in a message or a spreadsheet.
5. Learn paid advertising properly
Organic content is useful, but in practice most Tunisian e-commerce stores grow through Facebook and Instagram ads. Ads are where most beginners lose money, usually because they change too many things too quickly or judge results on one day of data.
Start with a small daily budget, test several creatives rather than several audiences, and judge results on cost per delivered order, not just cost per order. I share more of what I learned managing campaigns for over 50 brands in Facebook ads for e-commerce: lessons from 50+ brands.
6. Know your numbers every week
A store that looks busy can still lose money. Every week, check at least these numbers:
- Confirmation rate: orders confirmed by phone divided by orders received
- Delivery rate: orders delivered and paid divided by orders shipped
- Cost per delivered order: ad spend divided by delivered orders
- Net profit per delivered order: after product, delivery, returns and ads
If one of these numbers is weak, fix it before increasing your ad budget. Scaling a broken funnel only makes you lose money faster.
7. Get guidance instead of guessing
Most of the mistakes I see are predictable, and most of them are expensive. Learning from someone who has already made them saves months and a lot of money. That is the reason I founded Ecomgrowth Academy: to give ambitious people a clear path from zero to a profitable online business, with consulting, coaching and hands-on support.
The short version
Pick a product with proven demand, price it for cash on delivery, keep your store simple, organize operations before they overwhelm you, learn ads with discipline and track your numbers every week. Do these six things consistently and you will already be ahead of most new stores in Tunisia.
